Dame Malvina Major, a highly esteemed opera soprano with national and international acclaim, and a renowned voice teacher, has recently bestowed her extensive archive of personal papers spanning her illustrious career to the University of Waikato Library | Te Whare Pukapuka. This exhibition offers a sneak peek into her personal archive, highlighting key moments rich in detail, ranging from performances to various milestones throughout her professional journey.
Dame Malvina’s personal papers provide a glimpse behind the scenes, unveiling the life of one of New Zealand’s exceptional opera singers. The diverse collection encompasses details of her entire career, encompassing adjudicator notes from early exams and competitions, correspondence, performance planning, itineraries, programs, photographs, and recordings.
Through this extensive and varied archival material, Dame Malvina’s unique journey from the Waikato to Auckland, Melbourne, London, Europe, and back is traced, serving as a valuable resource for upcoming generations of aspiring artists. The archive’s contents vividly illustrate the depth and breadth of her impact and contributions to the arts community, especially for students navigating their own paths as performing artists.
