Welcome to Wharenui Harikoa, the most vibrant and colorful wharenui (meeting house) that will captivate your senses at the Waikato Museum!

From December 1, 2023, to March 17, 2024, immerse yourself in this extraordinary creation by the talented husband and wife duo, Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole. For the past eight years, they have poured their creative energies into exploring mātauranga Māori through crocheted sculptural forms.

Wharenui Harikoa, meaning “House of Joy,” stands as their most ambitious creation to date. A full-scale wharenui entirely crafted by hand, it marries the brilliance of neon colors with traditional toi whakairo (Māori carving) shapes. The aim of Wharenui Harikoa goes beyond its stunning visual appeal; it seeks to weave a narrative of intergenerational healing and profound joy—one loop at a time. Through this crocheted masterpiece, the creators intend to foster connections among people and ignite joy on a global scale.

Visit the Waikato Museum daily from 10 am to 5 pm (Closed Christmas Day) and experience the vibrant fusion of tradition and contemporary artistry. Entry is FREE, so come witness the manifestation of love and wool in the extraordinary Wharenui Harikoa.
