Te Huia, the regional passenger train service, provides an uninterrupted and reliable service to Waikato as well as Auckland. Since its introduction in April 6th, 2021 Te Huia has become an essential transport choice for commuters to and from Hamilton, Huntly, and Auckland. If you’re travelling on business or pleasure Te Huia will ensure an enjoyable, efficient and scenic trip that make regional travel easy.
Key Highlights of Te Huia's Service:
A Comprehensive Road Te Huia’s route to Waikato to Auckland includes six stops to allow ease of access and easy transfer:
- Frankton Station (Hamilton)
- Rotokauri Station (Hamilton)
- Raahui Pookeka (Huntly)
- Papakura Station
- Puhinui Station
- Strand Station (Auckland)
Flexible Schedule:
- weekday services (Monday through Friday): Two return journeys for daily commuters as well as travellers.
- Saturday Service One return service, ideal for weekend plans as well as city excursions.

Te Huia is operated by KiwiRail on behalf of Waikato Regional Council and stands as a separate service, distinct from Auckland Transport (AT). This allows for specialized services that are specific to the requirements that are required by those in the Waikato as well as Auckland regions.
Ticketing Options - Convenience at Your Fingertips
Passengers on Te Huia can select from two options for ticketing:
Paper Tickets:
- The cafe onboard is open Payable in either cash or electronic funds transfer.
Bee Card:
- Flexible contactless card for payment similar to the ATHO card.
- Payment Processing Bee Card payments are processed by the train’s supervisor with an electronic card reader that is mobile.
Where to Buy and Top Up Your Bee Card:
- Service Core topics are available for purchase at AT Papakura as well as the Puhinui Service Centers for the price of $10 (EFTPOS transaction only).
- Top-Ups and concessions The cards can be filled up at these locations, and concession management can be managed through Bee Card’s Bee Card website or through the Te Huia team (available 24/7 at 0800 205 355).
Smooth Transitions to Auckland Transport Services
At Papakura Station:
- Platform 1 The arrival and departing platform of Te Huia, featuring gated access that differentiates from Te Huia and AT’s ticketing systems.
- Transfers passengers who are continuing to the AT Metro Southern Line must utilize the AT HOP card to gain access on platforms 2 or 3.
At Puhinui Station:
- Platform 1 A dedicated platform to accommodate Te Huia’s departure and arrival.
- Transfers for journeys that take place on either the Southern or Eastern Line, passengers must connect with their AT HOP card in the fare machine located on the platform. Customer service centers at the concourse level can be found for obtaining tickets in paper form and offering assistance.
Important Note If you are travelling southbound via Auckland Transport services, warrant that you have your AT HOP card so that you can be properly charged.
