We have officially reached the last week of September, although judging by the temperatures, spring still seems a little confused. 😅
 
This week brings something for almost everyone. Hamilton’s central city is turning into a huge creative space for City of Wonder, plant lovers can take over Hamilton Gardens on Sunday, and there is live music, markets, sustainable fashion and the start of the school holidays.
 
There is also one important Sunday reminder: move your clocks forward one hour. We lose an hour of sleep, but we finally get those longer evenings back.

Hamilton becomes a City of Wonder
 
From Friday 25 September, Hamilton Central fills with art, design, installations, exhibitions and interactive experiences. The free programme runs until 4 October.

Plant lovers, Sunday is your day
 
Plant Extravaganza and the Waikato Orchid Show are at Hamilton Gardens from 9am to 3pm. Entry is $5, with children 12 and under free.

Longer evenings are back
 
Daylight saving starts at 2am on Sunday 27 September. Move your clocks forward one hour before bed on Saturday.

🪴 Plant Extravaganza and Orchid Show, 9am to 3pm: Browse houseplants, outdoor plants, flowers, seedlings, gifts and gardening accessories at Hamilton Gardens. Entry is $5 and children 12 and under are free.
 
 
🎸 Jon Stevens, 6:30pm: The Noiseworks and INXS Collection ’26 Tour arrives at The Factory.
 
 
🎶 Punjabi Virsa 2026, 7:30pm: Diwali Mela brings Punjabi cultural performance and live singing to BNZ Theatre.

School holidays start this weekend
 
Friday 25 September is the final day of Term 3 for state and state-integrated schools. The holidays run from Saturday 26 September to Sunday 11 October, with Term 4 beginning Monday 12 October. Check your school’s notices too.
 
 
Indoor idea: Waterworld is an option if the weather turns. Council’s latest update says Gallagher Aquatic Centre reopened on 7 September after its planned closure was shortened.

🌱 Create Your Own Tiny Garden
 
Dinsdale Library is running a free terrarium activity on Wednesday 30 September from 10am to 2pm for children aged 8 to 12. Registration is required. Bring a large, clean jar with a lid. Children under 14 must be accompanied by a caregiver.
 
🚧 Around Hamilton
 
Roads to know about
 
Ward Street: closed between Victoria Street and Worley Place around the clock until Saturday 26 September for tower crane installation.
 
Mill Street: closed between Tristram Street and Ulster Street from 11pm Wednesday 23 September until 5am Thursday for manhole work.
 
Darley Street: remains closed until Tuesday 29 September for water and sewer work.
 
Lane restrictions also continue around Mill Street, Tristram Street, Abbotsford Street, Dyer Street, Edgecumbe Street, Dixon Road, Seddon Road and Rimu Street. Allow extra travel time.
 
 
📚 Hamilton Libraries reminder
 
Hamilton Libraries says some digital and account services may be unavailable for about 12 hours from 1am on Wednesday 30 September while maintenance is completed. Bring your physical library card if you visit that day.
