Spring is here, Hamilton 🌸

Apologies for yesterday’s email. Here is your complete weekend plan, with everything you need to make the most of Hamilton this week.
Winter is officially behind us, and the first weekend of spring has given us plenty of reasons to get out of the house.
This weekend brings Welcoming Week, two Waikato rugby matches in one evening, markets, live music, sustainable fashion, a free science talk, and of course Father’s Day on Sunday.
The weather is looking mixed, but Saturday is currently shaping up to be the better day to get outside, so it might be worth making the most of it.
Here’s your shortcut to what’s happening around Hamilton this week.
Three things worth knowing
Welcoming Week begins, Waikato plays two rugby matches in one evening, and Father’s Day gives you a good reason to plan something together.
Hamilton’s Welcoming Week runs from Friday 4 September to Sunday 13 September, celebrating the many cultures and communities that call Hamilton home. Welcoming Manaaki Village is on Saturday from 10am to 3pm at Claudelands Hall B, with kapa haka, cultural entertainment, community displays and food. It is a free, family friendly daytime option.

🏉 Two Waikato games, one great night
FMG Stadium Waikato hosts Waitomo Waikato FPC v Auckland at 5:05pm, followed by Livingstone Waikato NPC v Canterbury at 7:10pm on Saturday.
👨 Father’s Day is Sunday
Father’s Day in New Zealand is Sunday 6 September. Breakfast or brunch, a walk around Hamilton Lake or along the river, the Farmers’ Market, or simply spending proper time together can make a good Hamilton Father’s Day. Book ahead if you plan to eat somewhere popular.

Thursday 3 September
Award winning Kiwi singer songwriter Mel Parsons brings her new Castle Hill album tour to Clarence St Theatre at 7:30pm.
Friday 4 September
Science communicator and behavioural ecologist Connal McLean explores New Zealand’s insects and other invertebrates, including the 2026 Bug of the Year winner, the Avatar Moth. It runs from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum and Gallery. Welcoming Week also begins today.
Saturday 5 September
Preloved, vintage, handmade, upcycled and locally made clothing, shoes and accessories. Visit Claudelands, at the corner of Brooklyn Road and Heaphy Terrace, from 11am to 4pm.
Celebrate Hamilton’s cultures at Claudelands Hall B from 10am to 3pm, with food, cultural entertainment, kapa haka and community displays.
🏉 Waikato rugby double header
Waikato FPC v Auckland kicks off at 5:05pm, followed by Waikato NPC v Canterbury at 7:10pm.
The Queen tribute show celebrates its 20th anniversary at BNZ Theatre from 7:30pm. Saturday night gives you a choice: rugby or Freddie Mercury.
Sunday 6 September
👨 Father’s Day
Happy Father’s Day to all Hamilton dads, grandads, stepdads, caregivers and father figures. Hopefully someone else is paying for your coffee today.
Head to The Barn at Claudelands from 8am to noon for local fruit and vegetables, bread, eggs, cheese, meat, honey and more. It is an easy Father’s Day morning before the wetter weather arrives.
Monday 7 September
Meet the team, see behind the scenes and learn how community radio works from 1pm to 5pm at 214 Collingwood Street.
Tuesday 8 September
A relaxed 90 minute creative workshop from 10:30am to noon at Arts for Health. Entry is $7.50 per person.
Hear community stories and explore local volunteering opportunities from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Settlement Centre Waikato, 46G Boundary Road.
Wednesday 9 September
Drop in at the Hamilton campus between 10am and 2pm for a tour, real class experience and information about study and internships.
Bring seeds to share or discover something new from 2pm to 3pm at Hillcrest Library at Hamilton Gardens.

A simple spring idea
Take a walk through Te Hikuwai Reserve
Not everything needs a ticket. This roughly 30 minute walk gives you a chance to see regenerating kahikatea forest and some of the reserve’s rarer ferns. It is suitable for different ages and makes an easy option when you have an hour to fill and the weather is behaving.

Roads to know about
Plan a little extra time
Allenby Street: closed 24 hours a day until Monday 14 September for road rehabilitation.
Te Rapa Road: night closure between the Sunshine Avenue roundabout and Garnett Avenue until Saturday 5 September, generally from 7pm to 6am.
Dixon Road: one lane between Briannarose Drive and Waterford Road remains closed during wastewater upgrade work.
Ongoing works also affect Mill Street, Tristram Street, Abbotsford Street, Dyer Street, Edgecumbe Street, Ward Street, Seddon Road and Rimu Street. Give yourself a few extra minutes.

One important reminder for homeowners
Rates and water services instalment due today
The first Hamilton City Council rates and water services instalment is due Thursday 3 September. The new invoices separate Council rates and IAWAI water services charges, although regular payment arrangements should include both automatically. It is not the most exciting part of the newsletter, but it is one of the more expensive things to forget.
