In July 2013, three friends in Hamilton decided to do something they had been thinking about for a while: organise an automotive scavenger hunt for other car enthusiasts. They formed Gumboot Rally Ltd, set a route from Hamilton through New Plymouth to Taupo, and invited others to join. Twenty-three cars showed up for the first event.
More than a decade later, Gumboot Rally runs at least twice a year, has sent hundreds of cars and thousands of people down the back roads of New Zealand, raises money for a different charity each year, and has become one of the most genuinely enjoyable automotive events in the country – not because it is the fastest or the most prestigious, but because it understands something fundamental about what makes driving fun: discovering roads you never knew existed, in company that makes you laugh.
The event is based around Hamilton but is not confined to it. Routes travel through the Waikato, across the North Island, and increasingly further afield. The 2025 April event ran Hamilton to Rotorua and back. The next Gumboot Rally is a one-day run on Saturday, 9 May 2026, taking participants from Lower Hutt to Greytown on a 350km route through back roads, with all funds raised supporting Kidney Kids.
For local Hamilton car enthusiasts, this event starts from home. For visitors, it is the kind of uniquely NZ experience – organised, playful, community-spirited – that is hard to find elsewhere.
How Gumboot Rally Works
Gumboot Rally is a two-day weekend event. The format is consistent across all events:
Day One (Saturday) is theme day. Every event has a specific theme – past themes have included race car, zombie, and school. Participants are encouraged to dress their vehicles and themselves around the theme. The Saturday also involves the core scavenger hunt format: a mission pack of tasks, challenges, photo opportunities, and navigational clues that send participants through specific locations and routes while accumulating points. The mission pack is received at the start line on the day of the event.
The Saturday evening concludes with a group dinner at a pre-announced venue (for the April 2025 event, this was the Sudima Hotel Rotorua) where fun prizes are distributed and stories from the day are shared. The Saturday dinner is a genuine highlight – the accumulated day of shared adventure means the room is full of energy.
Day Two (Sunday) continues the route through more backroads and challenges, concluding with the major prize-giving where all points from the weekend are tallied and prizes awarded.
The total distance covered across both days is approximately 700km of varied NZ terrain – from rolling hills to backcountry straightaways, farmland, coastal sections, and the kind of geography that only reveals itself when you leave the highway.
The Mission Pack: What You Are Actually Doing
The mission pack is one of the most creative elements of the Gumboot Rally experience, handled by the event’s creative team. It is not about speed – the FAQ is explicit: “Follow instructions for an exciting journey that focuses on enjoyment rather than speed or competition.”
Instead, the mission pack sends participants in search of specific photo challenges, scavenger clues, and wacky tasks tied to the route and the theme. Points are accumulated for completing challenges correctly and creatively. The judging at prize-giving is partly subjective (theme award) and partly objective (points tally).
The start line location is kept secret until the week of the event – sent by email to registered participants. This is a deliberate part of the event’s culture: “We keep this under wraps so the start is about you guys, not public.”
All Cars Welcome: What That Actually Means
The FAQ section of gumbootrally.com is genuinely specific about vehicle policy: “Anything is welcome, all makes and models. As long as the vehicle has a current WOF and is able to pass a pre-event check. Has insurance and current registration.”
Past participants have included Dodge Vipers, Aston Martins, Ferrari-engined Hondas (the Forarri), WRXs, Escorts, Commodores, Starlets, Corvettes, and a Lada. The mix is part of the event’s personality – there is no hierarchy of badge or value. The event’s culture actively celebrates the eclectic.
The ticket inclusions confirm the no-exclusivity approach: “Entry to Gumboot Rally for as many people as you can legally fit in your vehicle.”
Tickets, Pricing and What Is Included
For the April 2025 event, ticket pricing was:
- Entry per car (including driver’s dinner, shirt, stickers, mission pack): $299
- Passenger dinner ticket: $59 each
- Extra custom T-shirt (optional): $49
These prices may vary between events. Current pricing and ticket availability is always on gumbootrally.com.
What each entry includes: a limited edition custom T-shirt for the driver, sponsor stickers including door badges and car numbers, the mission pack with all instructions for the weekend, and eligibility for all prizes. Passengers receive a dinner ticket. Additional T-shirts can be purchased for passengers at the optional extra price.
The Charity Component: Having Fun While Doing Good
The official Gumboot Rally tagline is “Having Fun while Doing Good” – which reflects the event’s genuine commitment to charity alongside the automotive entertainment. Each year, Gumboot Rally selects a different charity to support, with participants actively encouraged to raise money for that year’s cause. The 2026 charity is Kidney Kids.
The format for charity fundraising creates genuine competition: “Big prizes up for grabs for the team that raises the most, so think outside the box.” This transforms fundraising from an obligation into another dimension of the event’s playfulness.
Past charity events have included a car show that raised money for Camp Twitch – an event that generated enough enthusiasm to become a permanent feature of the Gumboot Rally identity.
For Hamilton locals who appreciate the region’s distinctive automotive culture,Classics Museum at 11 Railside Place Frankton is worth knowing – 60+ classic cars on display in Hamilton’s Frankton precinct, a natural complement to any Gumboot Rally interest.
