20th Annual Frank Sargeson Memorial Lecture

The Frank Sargeson Memorial Lecture stands as a public event, a tribute to commemorate the life and enduring literary legacy of Frank Sargeson, Hamilton’s most renowned author.

In this lecture, Fergus Barrowman, the prominent publisher of contemporary fiction and poetry in Aotearoa, will delve into his extensive career as a reader, publisher, and editor. He will place particular emphasis on the reading practices that facilitate the art of discovery. What is the experience like when encountering a writer for the very first time, and what transformations have occurred over the span of several decades while collaborating with them on numerous books? How has the landscape evolved over forty years?

This year’s lecture will also serve as the platform to unveil the winners of the Sargeson Prize competition, which is New Zealand’s most lucrative short story prize.

Light refreshments will be available starting from 5 pm.

Co-hosted by the Friends of Hamilton Public Libraries.
