‘Operation Grapple – We Were There‘ is a compelling photography exhibition by Baynham that narrates the account of Operation Grapple through the poignant portraits of 19 New Zealand nuclear test veterans and the accompanying narratives of their experiences. Operation Grapple, a nuclear testing initiative in the Pacific from 1957 to 1958, involved the participation of RNZ Navy personnel, marking a relatively obscure chapter in New Zealand’s history. Unfortunately, Operation Grapple has left a lasting and distressing legacy for the veterans, their descendants, and generations to come.
Commencing in May 1957 and concluding in September 1958, Operation Grapple comprised a total of nine tests. During these trials, 551 New Zealand naval personnel served on the ships HMNZS Pukaki and HMNZS Rotoiti, witnessing detonations and collecting crucial weather data from as close as 37 kilometers to Ground Zero. Subsequently, many veterans and their families grappled with severe health complications, feeling unrecognized for their service at the time. It was only in 2002 that the Special Service Medal (Nuclear Testing) was finally bestowed. The portraits presented in this exhibition serve as a tribute and acknowledgment to these veterans – an opportunity to share their story.
Conducted as a personal project by Baynham, this initiative aims to shed light on the untold narrative of Operation Grapple and bring due honor and recognition to all those who participated. Over an 18-month period, Denise Baynham traveled across New Zealand, capturing photographs and conducting interviews with the nuclear test veterans. By presenting the veterans in the intimate setting of their own homes, Baynham humanizes the story, allowing viewers to connect with these men, understand who they are, and witness their lives over six decades later.
