Lake Kainui

Lake Kainui, also known as Lake D, it is located within the Kainui peat bog which is in the Horsham Downs, Northern Hamilton. Lake Kainui is one among the series of the lake you can find in this area. It’s a shallow lake with a depth of 6.7 meters and an area of 27 hectares. The lake has significant ecological values and is highly influenced by peat which gives the water a unique tea-color (brown). The lake is managed by the Lake Kainui Land-care Group since 1966.

Lake Kainui is also a popular spot for recreational activities especially during summer. Around the lake, there is a well-maintained gravel trail which is suitable for hiking, running, and walking which was opened in the year 2018 for public. Apart from this they have maintained grass grown area too, that maintain the beauty of the place. You can do fishing and water skiing also in the lake. The lake Kainui is considered as the best lake for coarse fishery out of the eight small lakes found between Ngaruawahia and Hamilton.

Activities for visitors | Lake Kainui

  • Hiking, Running, and Walking: There’s a well-maintained gravel trail around the lake if you’re looking for a flat place to run, walk or bike.
  • Bird Watching: The lake is surrounded by a variety of plants and is home to diverse birds,which makes it a great place for bird watching.
  • Fishing: It’s considered as the best coarse fishery out of the eight small lakes between Ngaruawahia and Hamilton.
  • Water Skiing: Water recreational activities are allowed at the lake.

Fair and visiting time?

Lake Kainui is open to the public for walking and it is free. However, if you wish to access the boat ramp, you have to pay $120.00 per season (October-May) for getting the access key. Out of this $21.00 is refundable on return of the key back to the authorities.  For those planning to visit in the evening, please be aware that the gates close at 8 PM. The reserve may be closed to the public in May, during the duck shooting season. You can find the car parking area by the edge of Lake Kainui. Near to the car parking, there are benches to sit and a toilet is also available.
