This distinction matters when you are meeting somebody or following a map. A store described as being at The Base may sit outside the enclosed Te Awa mall. Check the official listing for the store’s location and use the centre map before choosing where to park. If the listing says Te Awa, you will usually enter the enclosed centre. If it sits elsewhere at The Base, another car park or entrance may be more convenient.

The Base and Te Awa opening hours

The official standard centre hours are shown below. Thursday and Friday are the late nights. The Base Outlet currently lists 9am to 6pm daily, while the food court usually has a separate schedule. External retailers, supermarkets, restaurants and HOYTS can trade outside the general centre hours.

Do not treat these as guaranteed hours for every business. Public holidays, Christmas trading, events and store-specific schedules can change the plan. For a particular retailer, open its live directory listing. For a film, check the current HOYTS session. For a restaurant outside Te Awa, use that business’s official booking or location page.

What shops are at The Base and Te Awa?

The precinct covers fashion, footwear, jewellery, beauty, health, homeware, electronics, sport, books, gifts, groceries and everyday services. Te Awa contains many of the fashion and specialty retailers in an enclosed layout. The wider Base site includes larger home, lifestyle and general retail stores that suit bulky purchases or several practical errands in one visit.

Official centre information describes more than 160 tenancies across the precinct, but a fixed shop-by-shop list becomes outdated quickly. Food court, cafes and restaurants

The Te Awa food court is the simplest option when a group wants different meals in one place. The wider precinct also has cafes, takeaway outlets and restaurants, so the best choice depends on whether you want a quick stop, an indoor meal, a coffee while shopping or a longer sit-down visit.

Food-court hours are usually later than the main centre on several days, but individual operators can differ. Restaurant bookings, kitchen closing times and public-holiday schedules also vary. Use the official dining category to see the current options, then confirm the chosen business directly when timing matters.

HOYTS Te Awa cinema

HOYTS Te Awa is inside the enclosed centre and lists standard cinema screens, HOYTS LUX and Xtremescreen experiences. Films and session times change daily, so this guide does not reproduce a schedule. Use the official cinema listing or HOYTS booking page for today’s programme, age classifications, ticket types and seating options.

If a session finishes after the main shopping centre closes, follow the cinema’s after-hours access instructions. The centre’s current information directs late cinema visitors through the basement access near Paper Plus lifts or the travelator. Check the signs on arrival because routes can be affected by maintenance or events.

A film can push your visit beyond the normal four-hour parking limit. If your combined shopping, meal and cinema plan will take longer, register the vehicle at Customer Service during the visit rather than assuming the time limit does not apply.

Parking at The Base

The centre states that more than 3,000 free customer parks are available, including more than 500 covered basement spaces. Free does not mean unlimited. The published parking condition is a four-hour limit. If you need longer, register your vehicle at Customer Service so the extended visit remains free, subject to the current conditions and signage.

• Covered parking: basement parking is available beneath Te Awa, with lift and travelator access.

Choose the car park that matches the destination rather than the first empty space. On busy weekends and during seasonal trading, allow extra time and follow temporary directions from centre staff.

How to get to The Base by car

The Base is in Te Rapa at the intersection of Te Rapa Road and Wairere Drive. The official centre information lists two vehicle entrances from Te Rapa Road and another from Te Kowhai Road. The best approach depends on where you are coming from and which part of the precinct you need.

Buses, taxis and cycling

The BUSIT hub is near the northern end of Te Awa, close to Citta Design. Route 18 Te Rapa currently links the Hamilton Transport Centre, Waterworld, Bryant Road and The Base in both directions, seven days a week. Routes, platforms, fares and frequencies can change, so use the official journey planner on the day.

The centre identifies a taxi pickup point near the main Te Awa entrance. Bicycle racks are positioned near several entrances. If you are arriving by bike, use the centre map to choose a rack near the destination and bring a suitable lock.

Accessibility and family facilities

The enclosed centre lists automatic doors, wide aisles, lifts, escalators, travelators, covered walkways and mobility parking. Customer Service can lend a wheelchair or walking frame free of charge, subject to identification, availability and the centre’s terms. Equipment must be returned before the centre closes, so confirm the latest process when collecting it.

Accessible toilets and family rooms are available in Te Awa. Parent facilities include changing areas and feeding spaces, while marked parent parking is located close to selected entrances. Customer Service is near the main Te Awa entrance between Spark and Lush. It can help with directions, accessibility equipment, pushchair hire, lost property, centre enquiries and registering a longer parking visit. The desk generally follows the core centre hours, but check current details before making a special trip.

The centre also lists parent rooms, a playground, EV charging and scheduled Justice of the Peace sessions. A Justice of the Peace service is currently advertised for Saturday mornings, but volunteer availability and public holidays can affect it. Confirm the current session before travelling with documents.

For a lost item, note where and when you last had it, then contact Customer Service promptly. For a store-specific purchase or return, contact the retailer directly because centre management may not be able to resolve individual store transactions.

The history and design of The Base

The site has significance beyond shopping. Official centre history explains that the land was traditionally held by Waikato-Tainui, was taken for defence purposes before the Second World War, became Te Rapa Air Force Base and was returned through the 1995 Waikato Raupatu settlement. The modern precinct was developed by Tainui Group Holdings on behalf of Waikato-Tainui and is now held in partnership with Kiwi Property.
